Type Locality and Naming

The name of the Huanghuagou Fm was given by Tang Kedong and Su Yangzheng in 1966. The type section is at the eastern bank of Luohe River, approximately 15 km southeast of Duobaoshan in Nenjiang County, Heilongjiang Province.

Synonym: (黄花沟组)


Lithology and Thickness

It is dominated by pelitic slate, silty slate and pelitic siltstone intercalated with fine-grained arkosic quartzose sandstone.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation rests conformably on the fine-bedded slate of the underlying Aihui Fm of the Upper Ordovician

Upper contact

The formation rests conformably below the medium-fine-grained arkosic quartzose sandstone of the overlying Bashilixiaohe Fm.

Regional extent

It is steady in lithology, varying from 450-700 m in thickness and mainly distributed in the areas of Nenjiang and Aihui counties, Heilongjiang Province.

Fossils

The main fossils yielded in the formation are brachiopod, such as: Chonetoidea luoheensis, Meifordia subrotunda, Schizoramma rigida, Leangella auritus, and some trilobites which cannot be identified.

Early Silurian; and Ordovician entry for it implies begins in mid-Hirnantian.
